Nutrient pollution lacks a single source or solution, underscoring the importance of versatility, fluidity, and collaboration in the Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy.

NLRS working group meeting
The Illinois NLRS was developed through a coalition of partners led by a steering committee comprised of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Department of Agriculture, and University of Illinois Extension. The Illinois NLRS was formed and is sustained by collaborative efforts involving local, state, and federal agencies, municipalities, nongovernmental organizations, and technical experts in water quality monitoring, research, funding, and outreach.
The strategy, originally published in 2015, continues to showcase progress through the collection of data from approximately 60 partners, plus the 97 Soil and Water Conservation Districts serving Illinois’ 102 counties. Coordinated by University of Illinois Extension, partners report the following data related to nutrient loss reduction:
- Water quality metrics
- Research
- Resource investments, both staff and financial
- Outreach and educational activities
- Land and facility best management practice implementation metrics
- Programs or project descriptions
